HOLMDEL, NJ – The Hellenic Dancers of NJ (HDNJ) holds its 2019 Taverna Night performance on Sunday, April 7, 3 PM at Holmdel High School, 36 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel.
The two-part stage performance, “A Journey through the Aegean,” will focus on dances of the Aegean Islands for part one, and present a specially curated “pikilia” of dances from throughout Greece in part two. Evolving since antiquity, the dances of the Aegean are noted for their smooth, springy steps, and their use of the violin and lyra in their musical composition.
The HDNJ dancers and instructors have been busy this year attending dance conferences and completing research in an effort to add “new” traditional dances to the HDNJ repertoire, in order to further their mission to preserve and perform the traditional folk dances of Greece.
Proceeds from HDNJ’s Annual Taverna Night support the all-volunteer 501 (c) 3 nonprofit with general operating expenses such as insurance, travel, and wardrobe up-keep.
The HDNJ has been dedicated to researching and performing the traditional folkdances of Greece for 47 years. The organization has taught three generations of Greek-Americans from all over New Jersey the dances of their ancestors, and has continued to nurture the dancers’ love for their culture. In its 47 years of existence, HDNJ has performed throughout the United States, as well as up and down the East Coast, in an effort to perpetuate our heritage, and bring this traditional art form to the American public.
Tickets are available for advanced purchase, as well as at the door the day of the performance.
