TNH Staff Picks Best Version of Oh Holy Night: #10 – Mariah Carey

From now until Christmas Day we will feature the countdown of 10 of the most popular versions of the beloved Christmas carol, “Oh Holy Night.” To compare apples to apples, we chose 10 soloists, all female. Our staff members ranked the videos, and here are the results – from 10 to 1. Some comments from the judges are included (including my own two cents). How did we do? Please let us know – and, most of all, enjoy!

There is not a better example of “one person, one vote,” than this pick. Mariah Carey’s rendition was my top pick. But just about everyone else absolutely panned it! Vote after vote came in the same way – LAST! “She’s not singing, she’s squeaking,” one judge said. “Like fingernails on the blackboard,” said another.

I get the whole aversion to the “pop diva adlib” of a classic solemn song, but I still think her ability to glide across octaves effortlessly gets her the top spot in my book. But I stand alone. What do you think?
