Greek Words for Love Highlight of Super Bowl Commercial (Vid)

NEW YORK – The Super Bowl commercials are always a highlight of the big game and this year’s crop was especially creative. The Greek words for the four different types of love were the focus of the insurance company New York Life’s Super Bowl ad. The commercial, titled Agape, “highlights the importance of Agape, or ‘love as an action,’ according to New York Life,” heavy.com reported.

The commercial describes the four Greek words, filia as love that comes from friendship, storgi as love for a grandparent or brother, eros as romantic love, and “agape, which New York Life expresses as the most profound, admirable type of love, involves ‘courage, sacrifice, and strength,’” heavy.com reported.

New York Life, the nation’s largest mutual life insurer with more than $500 billion in assets under management, is also celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. The core business of the company includes life insurance, retirement income, investment management, and long-term care insurance. New York Life is the leading provider of life insurance and income annuities in the U.S.

The company’s Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer is Greek-American Theodore A. Mathas who became Chief Executive Officer on July 1, 2008, and was named Chairman of the Board of Directors on June 1, 2009. He joined New York Life in 1995 and previously served as the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, in addition to holding senior management positions in New York Life’s life insurance and annuity businesses and Agency Department. Mathas has been a director of the Company since July 2006. He was appointed to New York Life’s Executive Management Committee in June 2002.

Mathas serves on the Executive Committee of the American Council of Life Insurers, as well as the Boards of the American Museum of Natural History and the Partnership for New York City. He graduated with distinction from Stanford University with an AB and earned a JD from the University of Virginia.
