Anargyros Sakellaris of Milton, Mass Dies at 70

BOSTON- Anargyros Sakellaris of Milton, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at his home in the presence of his wife and children on Thursday evening, February 28. He was 70 years old.

Anargyros was known for his ethos and longtime valuable services to the Greek Orthodox Church and especially to his local parish of St. Catherine in Braintree, MA. He was the leading force, as The National Herald had written in the past, behind the relocation of the parish from Quincy to Braintree and for the building of the magnificent Byzantine-style Church and Community Center.

Anargyros was respected by the Greek-American Community of New England.

According to his published official obituary he was born in Vassara, Sparta on October 24, 1948. He was a son of the late Panagiotis M. Sakellaris and Areti P. (Spiropoulos). Anargyros was the beloved husband of Vasiliki (Lambrou) Sakellaris; devoted father of Peter, Areti, Demetrios, and Stephanie Sakellaris all of Milton; loving brother of Panagiota Pappas of Sharon, Helen Canellos and her husband Peter of North Quincy, and George Sakellaris and his wife Cathy of Milton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Anargyros had a dream to provide for his family, and at the age of eighteen he immigrated to the United States. His first job was as a dishwasher and he worked many jobs to put himself through school, eventually learning English and obtaining a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.

Anargyros had more than forty-five years of experience in the construction of buildings and facilities, specializing in architectural, electrical, energy and mechanical systems engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with multiple years of experience in the consulting engineering field and facilities engineering management. After working for many years in the engineering consultant and defense industries, he started his own engineering and consulting company in 1999, which he continued to run until his passing.

Anargyros married Vasiliki of Cumberland, RI in 1984. In the following years, they had four children, and Anargyros had a close relationship with each of them. He loved his Greek heritage and religion, and he especially loved to sing Greek folk songs and to dance. He had a great love of life and country, and he shared this love with his family. His other great love was for education and he helped his children with their studies and supported their pursuits in higher education. He continued to regularly quiz them on topics such as science and philosophy, ever the proud father to see how much his children knew.
