Message from the SNF on the Catastrophic Fires Afflicting the People of Greece

July 27, 2018

It is with great sadness, that all of us have witnessed the tragic reality of the devastation caused by the catastrophic fires in Greece. The loss, the tragic loss, of so many lives is too difficult to comprehend.

All of us, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, have always tried to support efforts that aim to strengthen public infrastructure and preparedness and as a result help to prevent and address, to the degree possible, such tragic events and their devastating human consequences.

It is in that spirit, that we are currently assessing ways to contribute towards alleviating the severe outcomes of this latest tragedy. It is never too late for all of us, together as a society, to dig deep and try to find ways to prevent such consequences, which are, simply put, so inhumane.

Healing is mandatory, but so it is finding ways to prevent living through such hell again; perhaps, prevention is even more important, if we want to keep considering ourselves as members of a humane society.

As we express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost a loved one in such a tragic way, and our deepest appreciation to everyone who has helped alleviate the pain during and after the fires, we remain, at the same time, deeply committed, to the best of our abilities, as we have always done throughout our 22 years of active philanthropy, towards contributing in any meaningful way we can.
