Wildfire Burning on Mount Athos Peninsula, Near Agia Anna

MT. ATHOS — A wildfire that broke out on Tuesday morning is burning in the area of Agia Anna in the Mount Athos peninsula in Halkidiki, where the monasteries making up the semi-independent all-male monastic community of the Holy Mountain are located.

According to the fire brigade, two helicopters and two fire-fighting aircraft are heading toward the blaze, which is burning in a rocky, hard-to-reach location, while 39 fire fighters with 11 fire engines and three ground teams will be fighting the fire on the ground.

Based on the Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, there is a high risk of fire in Halkidiki on Tuesday.
