ATHENS — Some 620 refugees seeking asylum in Greece have been transferred from the Kara Tepe municipal facility on the island of Lesbos, 540 to another facility that human rights groups said is inhumane and not safe.

There was no explanation from the Migration Ministry for the move which also saw 80 taken to the mainland, which island officials and residents want done for all the some 7,500 refugees and migrants still being housed.

Kara Tepe was seen as a model camp while the Mavrovouni facility where many were sent is seen as dangerous, especially for women, who said they fear being raped if they try to use a toilet at night, reported Al Jazeera.

Until April, the Kara Tepe 1 camp was home to around 1,000 people, including families and others with vulnerabilities while Mavrovouni was hastily built on an artillery range after the notorious Moria camp was burned down by a handful of migrants angry over COVID-19 restrictions.

“It’s not clean, the accommodations aren’t properly waterproofed, they’re not on flat ground,” said Imogen, a volunteer with an aid group that works in Mavrovouni. “There are no mattresses, it’s not a suitable place for people to stay,” said the report by John Psaropoulos.

Karolien Janssens, a doctor with Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF), said the New Democracy government hasn’t sufficiently alleviated the problem of overcrowding still lingering.

“Today in our clinic we had a pregnant woman who has moved who is totally freaking out. She and her family are now in a huge tent full of single men, with her four little children. So it’s totally out of place. It’s totally absurd,” she said.
