Mitsotakis Visits Naval Police, EU Maritime Safety Agency in Lisbon

January 11, 2021

LISBON — Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid a visit to the headquarters of the Naval Police of Portugal on Monday, at the start of his visit to Lisbon.

The police headquarters are at the Portuguese Navy's building, where the Greek PM was welcomed by his counterpart in Portugal Antonio Costa and the chiefs of the Navy and Naval Police.

On a videoconference Mitsotakis also conveyed his greetings to the Portuguese Coast Guard unit serving on the Greek island of Lesvos as part of the EU's border guard service Frontex. He made particular mention of the fact that Portuguese units at Lesvos have rescued over 7,000 migrants at sea in the last 7 years.

PM Costa noted that the collaboration between the Coast Guards of the two countries is excellent. "We are both maritime nations. We know what it means to be at sea, it is our natural environment," he said.

After a brief walk along the Tagus river, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean, the two leaders paid a visit to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) headquarters, where Mitsotakis saw the operations room and spoke with Greek employees.
