ATHENS – Continuing their onslaught with near-impunity, members of the anarchist group Rouvikonas (Rubicon) attacked the tax office of Psychico, an affluent suburb north of Athens, early on July 22 in protest against foreclosures being pushed by Prime Minister and Radical Left SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras who swore he would never allow “a single home in the hands of banks” but reneged on that promise along with essentially every one he made.

The group made a video of the attack, the latest among dozens of similar raids and assaults on targets that have also included the offices of SYRIZA – once the darling of anarchists and whose party is still riddled with them – as well as foreign embassies, politicians offices and other Capitalist symbols to protest austerity measures the country’s lenders demanded in return for three bailouts of 326 billion euros ($382.41 billion).

The bailouts include a third for 86 billion euros ($100.88 billion) that Tsipras sought and accepted in the summer of 2015, months after taking office and swearing he would defy the country’s creditor before surrendering to them, angering Rouvikonas and other opponents of the government coalition that includes the pro-austerity, marginal, jingoistic Independent Greeks (ANEL) of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

After imposing an avalanche of tax hikes and new taxes he swore he’d reject, Tsipras also agreed to new taxes on previously exempt low-and-moderate income families and individuals set to begin on Jan. 1, 2010.

The video of the tax office assault showed a small group of helmeted men smashing windows on the building’s front at 5:15 a.m. and also splashing paint on the building, another trademark of the group.

In a post on the same anarchist website where Rouvikonas posted the video of the incident, the group says the attack was in protest at the foreclosures it said were being brought by banks because homeowners could not afford to pay after eight years of pay cuts, tax hikes, slashed pensions and worker firings.
