SYRIZA to Commemorate Marfin Deaths with Laying of Wreath on Saturday

ATHENS – Syriza called for the identification and punishment of the perpetrators of a firebomb attack on Marfin in 2010 that killed three staff members, in a statement on the tenth anniversary of the event on Wednesday.

The attack by a group of people described by the media as anarchists during a protest rally for a first loan agreement signed by Greece cost the lives of three bank workers, including a pregnant women. Three bank officials were served manslaughter sentences. This week, political leaders have been widely condemning the event which shocked public opinion in Greece.

"As then, Syriza again calls for the identification and punishment of the perpetrators of this abhorrent crime," the main opposition party said. The party also charged that the current government includes "the same people who handled the case then without being able to locate the perpetrators and lead them before justice."

It added, "we hope that this time they will carry out their duty and resolve the case fully," and said it would place a wreath at the location of a commemorative plaque on Saturday morning.
