ATHENS – Some 1700 migrants – out of 2100 – scored more than 70 on a scale of 100 in the first countrywide examination for the Sufficient Knowledge Certificate for Naturalization, but still must undergo reviews to meet social criteria.

The Interior Ministry reported the results that showed most migrants had passed the knowledge criteria with flying colors and would be notified to come for an interview to also consider “economic and social criteria” to be granted their citizenship.

They have to also file income statements over the past three years and have worked a minimum number of days annually. Social criteria are “about if someone has integrated into the Greek way of life,” an official at the ministry’s Citizenship Secretariat told Kathimerini.

“For example, some had said in the past that they were not going to send their daughters to school because they don’t need the education. This is unacceptable; school is mandatory,” the unnamed official also said.

In some foreign cultures, such as Afghanistan, women are often not allowed to be educated and have fewer rights than men, which is not acceptable in Greece for them to be integrated into society and be given naturalized citizenship.
