Light at the End of the Tunnel?

After many days of clear preparations for a possible conflict with Greece, there may possibly be a dim – but visible – light coming from the dark depths of the Turkish proverbial tunnel.

A couple of days ago, we had the classic case of ‘good cop/bad cop’: the ‘good’ Turkish Foreign Minister and the ‘bad’ President of Turkey – which leaves some room for optimism.

On the one hand, the ‘good’ Foreign Minister claims that he is ready for negotiations – but did not refer to the reasonable, fundamental condition of Greece, the withdrawal of the Turkish warships and their research vessel from Greek waters.

On the other hand, the ‘bad’ Erdogan continues to hurl abuse at Greece, probably on the grounds that even if we do not respond to the ‘good’ Cavusolglu, he will have preserved his prestige in the Turkish public opinion.

Specifically, Cavusolglu said: “We favour a joint solution that involves sitting around the table to negotiate with all sides in the eastern Mediterranean, for everyone to benefit from the eastern Mediterranean resources in a just manner or for the sharing [of resources] fairly."

(It is not clear what he means by “all” the “sides” to which he refers, and what issues will be discussed, and this may involve risks).

Nevertheless, Erdogan continued his foolish insults: "It’s comical to use a country that can’t even help itself to bait a regional and global power like Turkey.”

Obviously this is a big part of his problem, his bigotry.

However, the statement of the ‘good’ Cavusoglu must be tested. Most likely it is a maneuver to get cover from the pressure he is receiving from third parties pushing for negotiations.

Perhaps – but we also have some mouths that should sometimes be kept shut.
