In the Shadow of the Monk’s Suicide: The Clergy Laity Congress in Arizona

Under the shadow of the alleged suicide of Scott (Ioannis) Nevins at St. Anthony’s Monastery in Florence, AZ, the 41st Clergy Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America convened in nearby Phoenix.
Under the shadow of the alleged suicide of Scott (Ioannis) Nevins at St. Anthony’s Monastery in Florence, AZ, the 41st Clergy Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America convened in nearby Phoenix. Things are becoming increasingly vague and awkward because more than three weeks after the unfortunate incident, there is virtual silence about it. Neither the police report or autopsy report has been released. The Archdiocese has not said a word yet, except for the letter of Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco informing the faithful of the incident and assuring everyone that he is praying for the repose of the late monk’s soul. The only one who has spoken publicly, through TNH, is Monastery Abbot Archimandrite Paisios.

Philip, I'd like to hear your opinion on this matter!

I focus on issues I understand and stay away from Orthodox Church stories. I'm amazed the traffic this newspaper generates when they post a Church story and how few of us comment when there's an article on Greece and the economic situation. I've come to understand that most Greek Americans have little understanding of economic issues and can't locate Cyprus within a thousand miles-sadly.

Mr. Kalmoukos, I subscribe to this site in large part because of you and your coverage of Greek Orthodox Church issues. We need to hear and be aware of what is going in the church. There are too many sheeple out there.

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE HERE? A man commits suicide in front of a Monastary Cult Center he resided in for over six years and nothing? Not even a statement that our Church is cooperating with the police and investigating? What do they teach there? How badly brainwashed was this poor man? INVESTIGATE AND CLEAN OUT THESE CULT DENS NOW!

There is no outrage because the laity is afraid to speak out. If you speak out, you are barred from communion, marriage and the rest of the sacraments. Priests are also afraid to speak out, lest they get assigned to somewhere in Alaska or North Dakota. (No offense intended to those who live there)

The more I hear about this monastery, the more concerned I become.
