SYRIZA: Mitsotakis Must Explain What Measures the EU Will Take Against Turkey

October 12, 2020

ATHENS — Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance on Monday again accused the government of failing to secure real EU support for Greece versus Turkey, noting that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis should now explain how the EU will respond to Turkey's latest plan for illegal exploratory drilling.

"Mr. Mitsotakis, who was triumphant over the European Council's decision that allegedly sent Turkey the message that its behavior will not be tolerated, while criticising SYRIZA for highlighting his absolute failure to secure a sanctions' mechanism …needs to explain to the Greek people what measures the EU will take against Turkey now that its new illegal Navtex has announced illegal drilling just 6.5 nautical miles from Kastellorizo," the main opposition said.

In addition, the announcement said, the prime minister "should inform the Greek people whether the region in the Navtex is part of the Greek continental shelf, as the foreign ministry clearly states, or an area in which both Greece and Turkey can claim rights, as stated in an article in foreign media."
