Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
DOHA – Evangelia Platanioti celebrated her second medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha on Tuesday, adding silver to the gold she had won in the technical solo program of Saturday (3/2).
She was awarded 253.2833 points in the free program and her silver medal brings the total world medals she has won to four – all the medals Greece has won in artistic swimming in the history of the competition.
Jacqueline Simoneau emerged as the world champion, with a highly difficult routine (49.1500 compared to 41.7500 in the preliminaries), executed it well, and scored 264.8207, securing Canada’s first gold medal in artistic swimming in 33 years. The third place medal won Belarusian Vasilina Khantouskaya, with 245.1042 points.
Another Greek athlete, Vasiliki Alexandri, who competed for Austria, topped the preliminaries but failed to deliver in the free program as well, making mistakes again and finishing in sixth place (as in the technical program).
