Athens will be the capital of rum on November 6-7. This large festival is the first rum festival to be held in Athens. It will take place at the Zappeion Mansion, The festival is organized by the bar Baba Au Rum (World’s 50 Best Bars 2013 and 2016) and the company Conf Expo Ltd.

Founder of the festival is Thanos Pournarous, bartender and owner of Baba au Rum and founder of the magazine Fine Drinking.
A large number of foreign bartenders and rum industries will participate in the festival.
“Bars in Athens have made significant progress,” said Pournarous.

He pointed out: “Only a few world cities can claim that they have a higher position than Athens and these are London, New York, and probably Sydney. There are many Greek bars and bartenders that are internationally acclaimed. For us, it is important to prove that Athens is a pioneer. We want to make the Athens Rum Festival one of the best in the world. It is vital that people from the specific industry as well as people that like fine drinking visit Athens.”

Though rum is not a traditional Greek drink, it is a key ingredient to many cocktails. Among them, the summertime favorite mojito, and in the cooler months, hot buttered rum. Most of the world’s production of the alcoholic beverage comes from the Caribbean and Latin America. In recent years, however, many countries around the world have begun producing their own varieties.
