Greek Solution Leader Wealthiest Politician, Varoufakis Next

ATHENS – As required, Greek political leaders filed their wealth declarations to indicate how much money they make and their sources and at the head of the pack was Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the ultra-nationalist Greek Solution party.

Known for shilling products on TV – including hair growth tonic even though he has thinning hair – and once-provocative statements before he toned down after getting into Parliament, he declared an income of 239,358 euros ($252,388.65.) His wife made 55,804 ($58,841.97.)

How they made their money wasn’t given in a report by Kathimerini which listed only the incomes published by a parliamentary committee of 1,068 politicans and other public servants for the year 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and it showed many were well off indeed.

Next was MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis who declared a total income of 195,851 euros ($206.513.13) while his wife declared an income of 2,708 euros ($2855.42.) He had been finance minister for the former ruling Radial Left SYRIZA before they booted him for being too provocative.

Then came the new leader of the PASOK-KINAL party, Member of the European Parliament Nikos Androulakis, who said he made 178,585 euros ($188,307.17) to lead the pack of politicians.

Prime Minister and New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he earned 77,603.30 euros ($81,828.02,) including 5,800 euros ($6115.75) from real estate and 1,837 euros ($1,937.01 from agricultural activity.

Mitsotakis’ wife, Mareva Grabowski, declared an income of 39,245.69 euros, ($41,382.23) including 30,000 euros ($31,633) from real estate.

His major rival, SYRIZA leader and former premier Alexis Tsipras, said he earned 69,296.08 euros ($73,083.56) while his partner, Betty Baziana, declared an income of 21,290 euros ($22,449.03) said Kathimerini.

Even the Communists were well off, with KKE General-Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas saying he made 74,943 euros ($79,022.90) but said it’s considered party income under their rules but he didn’t say if he kept it.

His wife declared an income of 14,824 euros ($15,631.02) but it wasn’t indicated if she gave it to the party or how they could make ends meet if they don’t have any money under party rules.
