ATHENS – With a surplus of sun, Greece ranks second in the world – theoretically – in the potential for solar production, just behind Spain, as the government is seeking to tap more sustainable sources.
That was shown in he latest report by the International Energy Agency about the potential for photovoltaic penetration, which saw Greece rise one position, said The Financial Tribune of the report’s findings.
Greece climbed one spot compared with the previous year’s index, when it scored 13.6 percent in solar energy penetration but in the wake of an energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, another 1.4 Gigawatts of capacity has been added.
Greece is now among the only nine countries that have photovoltaic penetration rates of more than 10 percent, above the European Union average of 8.7 percent after long failing to harness the energy of the sun.
IEA’s annual photovoltaic penetration ranking is based on the theoretical electricity production from photovoltaics per country, calculated based on cumulative photovoltaic capacity at the end of 2022, close to optimum siting, orientation and yearly weather conditions.
