It’s a daunting task heading a country’s Olympic Games but former Dow Chemical chief Andrew Liveris, who’s at the helm for the 2032 games in Brisbane – the home city where he went to high school, said he’ll bring them in on budget.

He told the Australian Financial Review he was staking his business reputation as head of one of the world’s biggest companies on making sure the games won’t be a financial burden as so many others have.

“I care about this enormously. I care about the fiscal side as much as I do about every other aspect. It cannot be a burden to the citizens of the state or city or country. I will work hard to deliver what is expected of us. That’s my assignment,” he said.

He believes it’s also a chance to showcase a city often overlooked behind Sydney and Melbourne, which had the 2000 and 1956 games, and that it’s an opportunity to showcase his beloved country. “With my new Olympics assignment, I love the alignment, which is to make Brisbane a global city built from the ground up on systems of entrepreneurship.”
