Dendias: Greece Has Special Interest in Issues Regarding Ukraine

January 24, 2022

BRUSSELS – Syria, Libya and the issues of Ukraine “in which Greece has a special interest due to the significant population of Greek expatriates in the wider Mariupol area,” are among the topics to be discussed by European foreign ministers at today’s Foreign Affairs Council, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Monday upon his arrival to the meeting.

The foreign minister added that the issue of Bosnia and Herzegovina “is again of great importance to us”.

In particular, Dendias stated:

“A very interesting discussion today at the Council of Ministers. First of all, on issues concerning Syria, Libya, but also issues concerning Ukraine, in which Greece has a special interest due to the significant population of Greek expatriates located in the wider area of Mariupol.

Also, the debate on Bosnia and Herzegovina is something that is again very important to us. A country that we care about for the stability and peace of the Balkans. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a black hole in the heart of Europe that needs to be addressed through an electoral reform, which will allow elections to take place in October and turn Bosnia and Herzegovina into a country which functions normally and has acquired a new possibility of a European course.”

Dendias meets with EU special representative Lajcak

During a meeting on the margins of EU Foreign Affairs Council, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias discussed with EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues, Miroslav Lajcak, the state of play and the way forward in the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and reiterated Greece’s firm support for his efforts to achieve progress in the relations between the two sides, according to a foreign ministry’s post on Twitter.
