EU Calls for Turkish Restraint

Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council expects Turkey to act in accordance with international law and demonstrate restraint with regard to its recent actions in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) where foreign companies are exploring for hydrocarbons.

Rompuy`s Spokesperson said “all parties must do their οutmost to ensure a positive climate in order to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue…The President is concerned about renewed tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean,” and said all sides must respect one another’s sovereignty. The statement emphasized that disputes must be settled peacefully in accordance with international law.
