Nicos Christodoulides, the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus warns that “A renewal on the part of Turkey of an illegal maritime order (Navtex) for areas within the Republic of Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), knowing that such an action would prevent the resumption of talks for the reunification of Cyprus would send a negative message to the international community,” according to CNA.

On October 3, 2014 Turkey issued a Navigational Telex, or NAVTEX,  a warning to Cyprus, the United States and Israel that Turkish exploratory vessels were under Turkish sovereign protection, and were not to be disturbed even though they were exploring  south of Cyprus. Turkey essentially “reserved a large swathe inside Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for seismic surveys from October 20 to December 30,” according to CNA.
