Greek Prosecutor Wants Stalled Novartis Case Re-Examined

December 4, 2019

ATHENS – With an alleged scandal a prosecutor said links Greek politicians to bribes from the Swiss drug company Novartis essentially dead in the water, it could be sent to an Appeals Court magistrate for review.

That request was made by a Supreme Court prosecutor, Vassilis Pliotas, who said that would lead to another examination of the case that has seen charges against seven of 10 rivals of the former ruling Radical Left SYRIZA already cleared.

It was based on the word of three alleged whistleblowers, two of whose identities remain secret, who said they overheard someone say that the accused took money but not a shred of evidence has been produced although former Premier and Leftist leader Alexis Tsipras said it was the “biggest scandal since the creation of the modern Greek state.”

Pilotas’ request, if accepted, would take the case away from corruption prosecutor Eleni Touloupaki, who is also being investigated for her handling of the charges that has seen her relentlessly pursue those already cleared and insisting bribery did happen.

She would have to hand over all of her files, including those on former health ministers Adonis Georgiadis, Dimitris Avramopoulos and Andreas Loverdos, whose cases are still pending but as some of the accused are suing to clear their names and any charges.
