Jon Hamm Discusses Greek-Owned Detroit Restaurants with Jimmy Fallon

December 12, 2020

DETROIT – Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Dec. 9 and the discussion turned to the famed Greek-owned establishments in Detroit serving hot dogs, the Detroit Free Press (DFP) reported.

Hamm was filming his latest project, No Sudden Move, a crime drama set in 1950s Detroit, with director Steven Soderbergh.

Hamm talked about filming under the COVID protocols now in place and how much he liked the city of Detroit, having never stayed there before. “We all stayed in the same hotel in downtown Detroit which, by the way, Detroit, if you get the chance, go visit. It's a very cool city," said Hamm, DFP reported, adding that “he also called Detroit ‘super awesome.’”

Detroit's reputation for coney dogs was then discussed as “both Fallon, who filmed the 2009 movie Whip It in the Motor City, and Hamm were pretty knowledgeable on downtown's dueling coney dog shrines, American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island,” DFP reported.

“Describing a hot dog run he made to Lafayette with his No Sudden Move costar Don Cheadle, Hamm said, ‘You know, they're right next to each other,’” DFP reported, adding Fallon’s reply, "Actually, the walls are touching… American might be the other one, right?"

Hamm said of the competition, "If you don't like the hot dog here, the exact same thing is right next door," DFP reported.

“According to the Detroit Historical Society (DHS), American Coney Island was opened in 1917 by Gust Keros, a Greek immigrant,” DFP reported adding that “in 1924, Keros brought his brother William to Detroit, who opened Lafayette Coney Island when space became available.”

“Fallon compared the rivalry to a Curb Your Enthusiasm storyline from the 2020 season (which featured Hamm as a guest star), DFP reported, noting that in the episode, “Larry David opens a spite store, Latte Larry's, next to a coffee shop that he holds a grudge against, Mocha Joe's.”

Hamm said, "It's not a spite store or it might be a spite store, but if it is, it's going on for 70 years, so it's amazing," DFP reported.

DHS pointed out that "both of these Detroit Coney Islands are incredibly popular to this day, where there is an ongoing argument over which establishment serves the best coney dog," DFP reported.
