COVID-19 Causing Cancellations, Pushback of Greek Festivals Across US

The ongoing COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic still raging across the United States is seeing Greek festivals canceled or postponed to prevent the kind of crowding that would violate social distance requirements.

The Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Cincinnati canceled this year’s Panegyri Greek Festival, said Fox19 News. It was scheduled for June 26 – June 28.

The festival, that would have been the 46th consecutive year for the church, won’t be rescheduled.

In Syracuse, New York, St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church was set to host the 47th Syracuse Greek Fest from June 11-14 but it’s set now for Aug. 13-16. Katina Luvadis, Parish Administrator, said the church wants to follow requirements.

The annual festival at State Fair Park in West Allis, Wisconsin that’s the biggest fundraiser for the Annunciation and Orthodox Church was scheduled for June 19-21 but that’s being used by a federal agency and the event is off.

“Our Annunciation Parish family is committed to doing everything we can to participate in the joint effort to restore life back to normal in our beloved Milwaukee community and beyond,” said Father Ciprian Sas, Parish Priest of Annunciation.
