NEW YORK – Among the leaders and institutions that have not permitted GreekAmericans – and their representatives in Washington – to forget about Cyprus’ struggle are Eugene T. Rossides and the Order of AHEPA. On March 21 the Cyprus Children’s Fund, Inc. honored them during its 2015 Testimonial Dinner at Terrace on the Park. Welcoming remarks were offered Savas C. Tsivikos, National Chairman and President of the Fund. Nico Zittis, the first president of the Fund, offered opening remarks and Ellpetha Tsivvikos sang the national anthems. After the invocation by Archbishop Demetrios the guest saw a video message by Andri Anastasiades, the First Lady of Cyprus. There were also greetings by Amb. Vasilios Philippou, Consul General of Cyprus, Manos Koubarakis, the Greek Consul, and Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA. Rossides, the founder of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), was presented the Cyprus Children’s Fund Recognition Award and Supreme President Phillip Frangos received the Humanitarian and Philanthropic award on behalf of AHEPA. AHEPA was being honored for the substantial donations it has made to the fund through the years, Amb. Philippou said, noting that AHEPA presented Nicos Anastasiades, the President of Cyprus, with a check for $25,000 for the Fund during his recent visit. “It was an indication of the relationship of mutual support that exists between AHEPA and Greece and Cyprus,” he said. Amb. Phillipou told TNH Rossides was worthy of the award for his great efforts in support of the rights of Cyprus and Greece both thought the work of AHI and with his publications, such as his recent book Kissinger and Cyprus – A Study in Lawlessness. The Fund was established to address the aftermath of the Turkish invasion and its impact on the children of Cyprus, according to Amb Philippou. “For decades the Cypriot diaspora has assisted the children of Cyprus,” he added, and noted that at first they offered direct aid and now their support takes the form of scholarships. “The Fund’s endeavors show that in addition to fighting for our national issues, the Community also has a humanitarian role,” he continued, adding with esteem that “despite the passage of many years Cypriots abroad continue to work hard to offer their fellow human beings the assistance they need.” He praised Tsivikos for devoting himself wholeheartedly to the goals of the organization. Tsivikos told TNH he was very pleased with the success of the event and the opportunity to express thanks to AHEPA and Rossides for their work in support of Cyprus since 1974. “Eugene Rossides was there from the beginning and he continues to teach us how the American system works and how citizens can engage it.”
