Thanou claims innocence over evading drug test

Katerina Thanou, a one-time silver medalist in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, who was later accused of avoiding a drug test for doping, announced her retirement.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou reiterated her innocence on Sunday over evading a drug test at the 2004 Athens Games, denying she has ever doped and confirming her retirement with no prospect of running again at the Olympics.

I'd like to believe Mrs. Thanou's story. I watched her and Kenteris run with great pride in Sydney and hoped to see them medal in Athens. Unfortunately her story stinks like a 3 day old fish. I'm forced to believe that like Marion Jones, Katerina Thanou was a doper.

Unfortunately, runners at their level have been known to dope. It's an open secret in that community that to reach their level of performance, a number of athletes have taken uncontrolled substances to improve their performance level.
