Who Benefits from Creating a Climate of Political Acrimony?

While the Prime Minister of the country was in Canada, the leader of PASOK – the third party according to the latest elections – raised the issue of mistrust in the government, followed by the other… ‘progressive forces’, as we used to say. “We submit a vote of no confidence,” said the leader of this party, Nikos Androulakis, “against your government, signed by the Central Committees of PASOK, SYRIZA, New Left, and the Course of Freedom. Mr. Mitsotakis has no other choice. He must come here to justify the actions of his government regarding the tragedy of Tempe.”

This came immediately after the publication of an article in the Sunday edition of the newspaper ‘To Vima’, which spoke of a “manipulation” of the audio recordings of the people involved in the Tempe train tragedy, the alleged creation of a so-called ‘montage’ of audio clips.

The train crash in Tempe is certainly an unspeakably tragic case, an accident that led to the death of dozens of innocent people, many of them young. There is a huge moral difference between this point, justifiably manifested in anger and calls for investigations, and the point of shamelessly opportunistic political exploitation of the issue. It is obvious, almost blatantly obvious, that for some time there has been an attempt to cause political upheaval – if not a national crisis – by media owners, some of whom are business moguls of great wealth, in collaboration with various opposition parties. In other words, something similar to what happened in the past is being attempted, which harmed the country. How long will we tolerate this situation? Why is this being attempted? Certainly, it has nothing to do with the best interests of the country. And they do not feel the pain of the victims and their families more than the Mitsotakis government does.

However, they are using human pain as a pretext to weaken, if possible, Mitsotakis, who was triumphantly re-elected just a few months ago. As I recently commented, the opposition is making increasingly incendiary statements, challenging the basic achievements of the Greek people, to make an impact. Of course, Kyriakos is not in danger of losing the trust of the people and the Parliament. His opponents know this well. However, there is a risk of creating a climate of acrimony in the country from which only the far-right elements will benefit.
