December 13, 2022

NICOSIA – The University of Nicosia (UNIC) is one of the leading research-based universities in the Mediterranean region. Its academic standing and global outlook have been reflected in international rankings. The latest 2023 report by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the best-known and most influential university rankings system globally, places the University of Nicosia among the Top 501-600 (or top 2%) universities in the world.

The University espouses the concept of ‘One Health’, an approach that recognises that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and the environment. The close synergies between the Medical School and the School of Veterinary Medicine create an ideal academic ecosystem offering a well-rounded education in medicine and veterinary medicine that meets the collective health and safety needs of the modern world. These EU accredited health programs, allow medical and veterinary practice pathways in the European Union and worldwide.

THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

The Medical School offers two medical programs: the 6-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme for high-school leavers and the 5-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme for graduate students. Both programmes, which take place in state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories, offer early clinical exposure from Year 2. They are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and are accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education standards.

Clinical Placements

With a fully integrated clinical training programme spanning three continents, the UNIC Medical School offers a truly international educational experience. The clinical years are spent in teaching hospitals either in Cyprus or at partner hospitals in UK, USA, Switzerland, Greece, or Israel (subject to student nationality.)

The Medical Centre

UNIC’s Medical Centre operates under the Cyprus General Healthcare System and serves the primary health care needs of the University of Nicosia community and the population at large. The Centre is also serving as a training ground for the medical students.

Mobile Clinic Expeditions

Social responsibility is fundamental to the Medical School and is demonstrated by substantial and varied contributions to society. The most popular activity, which takes place twice a month, is the mobile clinic expeditions. Student volunteers and School physicians travel around the country and provide free diagnostic tests and examinations to residents of remote areas, the elderly, refugees, and the general public.

Postgraduate Employability at 99,9%

Based on employment records for the period 2015-2022, out of a total of 752 Medical School graduates, 751 or 99.9%, have been offered positions at over 300 medical centres around the world for residency training and research. The list is long and includes world-renowned medical centres such as John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Mount Sinai in New York, St George Hospital in Sidney, and Sheba Medical Centre in Israel.

THE SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

University of Nicosia

The newly established School of Veterinary Medicine is the first of its kind in Cyprus and it is based on the successful model and philosophy of the Medical School. It offers the 5-year programme Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) for high-school leavers. Its curriculum is aligned with day one skills and competences as required by UK Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the European Association of Establishment for Veterinary Education, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the World Organization for Animal Health.

The innovative and student-centered curriculum covers all the fundamental topics of veterinary medicine, and promotes the early development of clinical skills from year one through comprehensive clinical training in small and large animals.

Modern Student Living

The University’s student residences redefine modern student living. They are among the most stunning student accommodations ever constructed in Europe. The residences are surrounded by UNIC’s vibrant, urban campus that, in addition to 20 university buildings, is home to more than 70 restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and bars, all within walking distance.

In 2017 the World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Cyprus as the safest country for people aged 15-29.
