Tsipras Meets with Delegation of Greek National Minority in Albania over Beleri’s Detention

ATHENS – SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras met on Thursday in Athens with representatives of Albania’s ethnic Greek minority to discus the issue of the continued detention in Tirana of ethnic Greek Fredi Beleri, newly elected mayor of Himare.

The delegation visiting the party headquarters included Giogos Tzomakas, vice-president of the ‘Omonoia’ organization (one of three main representatives of the Greek National Minority in Albania), the President of the Association of Himare in Greece Thodoris Goumas, and Fredi Beleri’s son Petros Beleri.

Commenting on the issue, Tsipras pointed out that Beleri’s arrest two days before elections and his continued detention without solid evidence against him is provocative and does not comprise a just treatment of an elected member of local government.
