This Play about a Punk Band in Prison Grew Out of a Transformative Program for Women

NEW YORK — Clean Break believes theater has the power to change the lives of women who have experienced Britain’s criminal justice system. Through programs including two levels of drama and theater workshops, a writers circle, and a workshop for young women, Clean Break helps women build self-esteem and communication skills, offers support for their overall wellbeing, and gives them a creative outlet and voice in their community.

Now you can catch three of the organization’s Members acting professionally in a production currently onstage and streaming live this week.

Typical Girls, about a group of women in prison who form a punk group, is on now in Sheffield and will be streamed live on Wednesday, October 6. Read about the work’s origins from playwright in The Guardian.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided a recent grant for Clean Break’s Members’ Programme, their suite of theater workshops and personal support. SNF has also supported other programs that use the arts to serve people affected by criminal justice systems, including Recess and Rehabilitation Through the Arts in New York.
