Special Education Schools to Close in Attica Due to Weather

February 15, 2021

ATHENS — Special education schools of all levels in Attica will remain shut through Wednesday, February 17, due to the weather and to prevent accidents, the region's governor announced on Monday.

While all schools have moved to online classes due to coronavirus restrictions, special schools were exempted from shutting down until the 'Medea' weather front brought very low temperatures and ice conditions this past weekend.

A cold weather front has hit Greece, sending temperatures plunging from the low 20s Celsius (around 70 Fahrenheit) on Friday to well below freezing on Monday, and seeing snowfall in central Athens.

Authorities appealed to the public to restrict their movements outside to the essential only, while the main highway leading north out of the capital was shut due to snowfall.
