Greek Man Hid Dead Aunt’s Body, Collected Her Pension Checks

Greek police in the village of Pogoni, near the northwestern city of Ioannina, are investigating the death of a 69-year-old woman whose body was found in a sealed trunk in her basement, her 56-year-old nephew said to keep collecting her pension.

No names were given but Kathimerini said the man claimed she died of natural causes and that he admitted hiding the body so that he could get her checks, but an autopsy was ordered and the man was arrested him on suspicion of murder.

The discovery was made following a call from the woman’s neighbors, who were concerned for her safety after not seeing her around the neighborhood for several weeks, the report said.

There have occasionally been reports in Greece of people not revealing that relatives had died so that they could keep collecting their pension checks and many cases of outright fraud to obtain benefits.
