Greece Reports New Record High of COVID-19 Cases

ATHENS -Greece registered a whopping 6,700 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, exceeding Monday’s record-breaking figure of 5,449, with 16 of these identified at entry points to the country, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Tuesday.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 754,451 infections (daily change: +0.9 pct). Of the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 143 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,568 to other confirmed cases.

There are also 59 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of pandemic victims to 16,050. Of these, 95.4 pct had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.

A total of 434 patients are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 64 years and 79.5 pct have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over. Of the total, 370 (85.25 pct) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 64 (14.75 pct) are fully vaccinated. Another 3,324 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

In addition, 321 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: +28.92 pct). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 286.

The median age of new infections is 38 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).

In the geographical distribution of Tuesday’s new infections 1,329 cases were registered in Attica region and 1,108 in Thessaloniki.

Indicatively, high infection rates were recorded in Larissa (514) and the region of Magnissia (264), while Corfu confirmed 74 cases and Crete’s largest city Heraklion registered 90 cases. Other islands fared better, with Santorini confirming 5 cases and Mykonos registering only 2 cases on Tuesday.
