Cretan Priest Arrested for Urging COVID-19 Mask Defiance

September 17, 2020

After a teacher on Crete was assaulted by a parent who didn't want his child wearing a mask, a priest in Rethymno on the island was arrested after he appeared on video opposing the use of the COVID-19 protective gear.

He wasn't identified by the state-run broadcaster ERT said his remarks came during the customary blessing ceremony marking the start of the new academic year at a local kindergarten.

He was to face a local prosecutor on the charge of inciting disobedience to the law with the New Democracy government extending the requirement to wear masks to more places, including outdoor gathering spots.

Like other countries, Greece has an anti-masker contingent including parents who believe the masks are not only protective but unsafe and there are conspiracy groups who think COVID-19 is a hoax designed to control them, which doesn't seem to be working yet.
