WSRE TV in Pensacola, Florida decided to show local chefs and eateries during the COVID-19 pandemic in a show called Beyond the Menu but when one of its fist choices, Skopelos at New World, was damaged by Hurricane Sally it gave Gus Silivos a showcase his Scenic 90 Cafe on-air.
Silivos opened Scenic 90 in 1999 after traveling the Northeast and said while he found plenty of Greek diners with bit menus there weren't any in Pensacola, home to the first Naval Air Station in the U.S.
He decided to use his Greek food cooking skills and blend them with southern dishes, showing off his pimento and fried green tomato omelet alongside a Gyro on the show.
His place is a 2020 Trip Advisor choice for good reason although he acknowledged the blow from COVID-19, especially on Thanksgiving his year.
“Obviously everyone’s business has been affected by this and fortunately we are lucky to be in an area right now where we are not scaling back as much as the other parts of the country is doing,” he told WEAR-TV, going take-out for the family holiday.
