Albania Bans Greek Cypriot European MP from Entering

November 11, 2018

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania’s Foreign Ministry says that a Greek Cypriot European parliamentarian has been banned from entering the country again for her extremist anti-Albanian activities at a funeral.

A statement Saturday accused Eleni Theocharous of inciting hatred, violating Albania’s constitutional order and of territorial claims to Albania.

The same decision was taken by the Interior Ministry a day earlier for the behavior of 52 Greeks among hundreds of them taking part at the funeral of an Albanian-Greek citizen who was killed in a gun battle in the village of Vouliarati, 255 kilometers (160 miles) south of the capital Tirana.

Konstantinos Kacifa (Katsifas) died in a shootout with police Oct. 28 during an event to celebrate Greece’s entry in World War II against Italy.

The incident has heightened tensions between Greece and Albania.
