ATHENS – High school examinations in Greece were interrupted two days running by cyberattacks in sites around the country as officials scrambled to deal with them and set up defenses.

No group took responsibility nor was it reported why the exams were targeted although media reports said the attacks disabled the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET) platform.

That provides teachers topics for the exams, as well as the Panhellenic School Network, the Internet Service Povider of the Ministry of Education, which connects school rooms and administrational services.

“This attack that took place yesterday and I must say that it also took place this morning, is an attack on education,” General Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alexandros Koptsis told ANT1 on May 30.

Asked why there are no safeguards in place to protect critical infrastructure, Koptsis said the attack “hit another part of the infrastructure,” but didn’t provide any further details other than saying the ministry was “fully activated.”

The first day’s attack blocked access to the platform, preventing students from taking the exams at dozens of schools as officials from the ministry and GRNET said the tests wouldn’t be compromised at all.
