The purpose of the Greek Prime Minister’s visit to New York was to participate in the opening of the new session of the UN General Assembly.

In this context, he had a series of meetings – including right after his arrival on Tuesday night in New York with his Israeli counterpart.

He had to attend some of the speeches of various heads of state and his fellow prime ministers in the General Assembly, grant interviews promoting the national issues of Greece, and of course, present the positions of his country from the podium of the UN General Assembly.

First and foremost, he had to preserve the honor and dignity of his country after the ridiculous interview of the Turkish president on PBS and his insulting speech at the UN.

And yet, despite all this, Kyriakos Mitsotakis insisted on devoting many hours of his time to the Greek-American community.

He attended the reception that Greek-American societies and organizations held in his honor at noon on Wednesday in the packed main dining room of the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park, and yesterday during his trip to Ground Zero and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine.

It’s clear he likes being around Greek expats and American-born Hellenes – did you see his reaction when he met a Greek taxi driver in Manhattan?

It is significant that he knows many of us on a personal basis and understands us from the years he studied here, as well as from his meetings during the years of his prime ministership. He knows the struggle and the possibilities of Hellenism Abroad and its contribution to the motherland like very few.

The members of the Community grasp these facts, and they support him also because they feel relieved that he is the helmsman of the state in these difficult times.
