Rep. Liz Cheney lost her re-election battle to the House of Representatives by a wide margin. The people of her home state of Wyoming listened to Donald Trump and punished Cheney for her opposition to the former president.

Cheney serves on the committee investigating the events of January 6.

So one might think that the Cheney political dynasty is over – her father held many high government posts, most recently when he was vice president under Bush Jr.

I think the opposite will happen.

Cheney is no ‘crazy leftist’. She is very conservative. She even supported Trump – in everything. Where she drew the line was with Trump’s big lie that he lost because the election was ‘stolen’, and when the mob stormed the Capitol.

There are more than a few Republican politicians who believe the same as Cheney – who speak in the most disparaging terms about Trump.

But few have the integrity, the sense of duty to country, to democracy, and to the Republican Party, that she has. How nice to see a politician fighting for what s/he believes in, knowing in advance that s/he will pay a heavy price!

That is why Cheney won the appreciation of many Americans throughout the country. That is why, as time goes by, it will be appreciated even more. That is why she is not done politically. The opposite is the case.

The time will come when – it will happen often – politicians will understand that doing the right thing is also politically beneficial.
