Tsipras to Euractiv Stresses Need for a Progressive Coalition

ATHENS – Greece’s next national election is scheduled in one year, but the scenario of a snap election in the autumn seems increasingly likely, main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said in an interview with Euractiv on Monday.

Tsipras said that if his party comes first, the door will open for a wide progressive coalition to put an end to the “nightmare” created by the Mitsotakis government, where he said the average household runs out of money on the 19th of each month.

Tsipras also voiced concern that Turkey’s international role, as he said, is being upgraded.

“Turkey, which has been illegally occupying the northern part of Cyprus for 48 years, wants to mediate for peace in Ukraine and is being upgraded in both the eyes of the West and the East,” he said.

“This worries us to the extent that Greece, at the same time, not only abandons its dogma in foreign policy, but becomes a given ally of the West […] at the end of the day, becomes a pawn on the chessboard of third powers,” he added.
