Tell Me the TV station You Watch and I’ll Tell You Who You Support

It's not fake, or as we say in Greece, ‘monkey news.’ At least, not what we see in the well-known, historic mass media outlets. And the media is not the "enemy of the people" – an expression that goes back to the dictatorships of the 1930s – as Trump accuses them of being.

What is unfortunate, however, and what is happening more and more, is that the cable news stations are becoming more and more one-sided, increasingly in favor of one side or the other – and intensifying their criticism.

In contrast, traditional television stations and major newspapers, such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, still maintain some sort of balance, especially when it comes to publishing dissenting opinions.

More and more it is becoming apparent that the two sides of the political spectrum revolve around one person. It has now become: those "with Trump" and those "against Trump" free-for-all.

There is a struggle that is being fought every minute and every hour to gain the attention and support of the American people.

On the other hand, foreigners – and especially Europeans – have decided: they are against Trump.

But in America, whether someone agrees or disagrees with Trump can be easily discerned on the television station he or she watches.

Against him are MSNBC and CNN. The Fox News Channel is in his favor.

And depending on which channel you watch, the picture you get of the situation in the country is completely different.

For example, Monday night was a time when television’s star anchors reacted completely differently to the news that police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Lafayette Park in front of the White House so that Trump could walk across it.

CNN's Anderson Cooper commented: Trump “seems to think that dominating black people, dominating peaceful protesters is law and order. It’s not. He calls them thugs. Who is the thug here? Hiding in a bunker. Hiding behind a suit. Who is the thug?"

On the other hand, Fox News channel's Tucker Carlson said that Trump provided “a powerful symbolic gesture, a declaration that this country, our national symbols, our oldest institutions, will not be desecrated and defeated by nihilistic destruction.”

Commenting on another point, Fox’s Sean Hannity said, “if the liberal mayors or governors in most cases are unwilling and unable to protect their own citizens, the federal government will.”

But Rachel Maddow said on MSNBC, “While there are depths that even the most doomsday predictions about the Trump presidency did not plumb, this rubicon moment arrived tonight in the haphazard and slipshod way that has become familiar for most of the other previously unimaginable dark turns this country has taken since Mr. Trump has become president.”

CNN's Chris Cuomo concluded of Trump: “This is who he is, and it's not what the country needs right now.”

And finally, Fox's Laura Ingraham said: "Criminals and local terrorists are using George Floyd to try to assassinate America. Tonight, the President confirmed his duty to support the Constitution."

So tell me which station you watch and I will tell you whether you are with or against Trump!

I obtained the quoted comments from the Associated Press.
