Golf Commentator Kostis Rips CBS Over Firing

March 8, 2020

Peter Kostis, dropped from CBS’ golf coverage team at the end of 2019 after three decades, lambasted the network and the PGA Tour, telling the No Laying Up podcast he didn’t care he was let go and that money doesn’t matter.

Kostis, 73, laid into both hard, saying his candid style wasn’t in sync with the tour’s emphasis on promotion and that it wants “cheerleaders” more than analysts and that the PGA directed CBS to get younger people as golf isn’t edgy enough for a generation growing up on extreme sports.

“From the bottom of my heart I believe this, that no one in management of a network or at the leadership of the PGA Tour gives a rat’s ass about the quality of the telecast,” Kostis said.

“They don’t care about the quality of the viewer experience. They don’t care about anything other than promotion. They’re interested in the marketing of the product,” he also added.

Kostis said he never got a straight answer from CBS. The network supposedly pushed for Kostis to work through this month’s Waste Management Phoenix Open but he was just being pushed out.
