HALC: Tell Senator McConnell to #SanctionTurkey

March 11, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC – The Hellenic American Leadership Committee (HALC) is calling on everyone to sign a petition urging support for Greece and sanctions against Turkey for its destabilizing actions. The petition specifically addresses Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and urges him to bring the important bipartisan legislation to the Senate floor and hold Turkey accountable for its bullying actions in the region.

The text of HALC’s message follows:

Thousands of you have taken action in the last week asking the State Department to issue a strong statement in support of Greece as it deals with the consequences of Turkey’s destabilizing actions. Your pressure worked, but now we need your help again.

Take action here: www.hellenicleaders.com/SanctionTurkey

There’s a bipartisan bill, already passed overwhelmingly by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, that holds Turkey accountable for its bullying actions in the region. S. 2641, the Promoting American National Security and Preventing the Resurgence of ISIS Act of 2019:

condemns Turkey’s invasion of Syria, its treatment of the Kurds, and demands that Turkey recall its troops;

restricts the sale of defense articles, services or technology to Turkey if they could be used by the Turkish Armed Forces in Syria;

declares that the U.S. should oppose any loans from international financial institution that would benefit the Government of Turkey;

requires the State Department to produce a report analyzing Turkey’s commitment to NATO;

imposes sanctions on senior Turkish government officials;

imposes other sanctions, including sanctions for Turkey’s acquisition of the S–400 air and missile defense system from Russia.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must immediately bring this bill to the floor for a full vote in the Senate. Failure to bring this to a Senate vote encourages Turkey to continue to act with impunity and take fundamentally destabilizing actions such as weaponizing migrants and trying to overwhelm Greece’s borders.

Please sign our petition urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring this important legislation to the Senate floor for a vote: www.hellenicleaders.com/SanctionTurkey
