Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS – Greece’s Supreme Court prosecutor’s office is looking into the release of a special police guard who shot and killed 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos in December, 2008 during a confrontation with a group, the death setting off two weeks of violent riots.
Ironically, Epaminondas Korkoneas was let out of jail under a new leniency law approved by the former ruling Radical Left SYRIZA, legislation that critics said was geared toward getting out of jail anarchists and terrorists.
Korkoneas was released from a high-security prison in Domokos, near Lamia in central Greece, in July after an appeals court reduced his term from life to 13 years and as he had served 11 years in jail plus time served while waiting to be tried.
The decision to review the ruling came after the Supreme Court prosecutor’s office deemed that there were insufficient grounds for Korkoneas to be shown leniency, said |Kathimerini and now the court’s criminal section will look into the release.
According to the case file, Korkoneas, who has shown defiance and not remorse, fired twice with his revolver in the direction of the group and one of the bullets rebounded off a cement structure and hit Grigoropoulos in the chest, killing him instantly.
