ATHENS – Continuing a crusade to take back the Exarchia neighborhood from anarchists and criminals, Greek police emptied another abandoned building of more than 100 refugees and migrants living there unlawfully.

The squat, known as Clandestina” and located at 42 Bouboulinas St. had been evacuated back in April this year but was reoccupied a few days later when the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA was in charge before being ousted in July 7 snap elections by New Democracy.

The refugees and migrants who were evicted were taken to the police’s aliens bureau for identification and slated to be sent to detention centers and camps around the country hosting more than 73,000 of them, the state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Police have relentlessly been ridding the squats of people living there with the notorious anarchist group Rouvikonas who had vowed to protect them backing away instead as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he would end lawlessness and violence in the area.

A gritty, grimy, graffiti-covered neighborhood of cement buildings coveted nonetheless by Airbnb customers, driving out many residents, Exarchia is slated for an upgrade renovation including removing graffiti and a metro station.
