Record Busted: 33 Million Tourists Flooded Greece in 2018

January 31, 2019

Showing a jump of some million visitors in two years, Greece’s run of record-breaking tourist seasons topped 33 million in 2018, bringing in some 16 billion euros ($18.37 billion), Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura told Alpha TV.

Tourism is the biggest revenue driver in the country and shows no signs of abating with 2019 expected to chart even higher, helping propel a rebound from a more than 8 ½-year long economic and austerity crisis.

It won’t be as easy as it seems as the country’s infrastructure and hotels try to keep up with the demand and with unexpected effects if the United Kingdom, as scheduled, leaves the European Union.

Some low-cost airlines shuttling tourists to Greece from other European Union and European countries are also facing difficulties and other countries are competing for the visitors as well, especially Turkey, which ranks ahead of Greece for the most-visited.

Kountoura said she will have meetings with British and European tourism industry operators in order to minimize the impact of any problems and to ensure the flow of tourists to Greece continued to increase.
