Eight Greek Riot Police Hurt in Lesbos Refugee Center Riot

March 15, 2018

With more more refugees and migrants pouring onto Greek islands, eight riot police were injured when clashes broke out at the overcrowded Moria detention center on the overwhelmed island of Lesbos the night of March 14.

Media reports said that nearly 150 people angry they have been held indefinitely as Greece struggles to deal with asylum applications from refugees and migrants who want to stay after the European Union shut its doors to them and reneged on promises to help relieve the country of an overload of more than 64,000, including nearly 15,000 on islands.

Turkey has let human traffickers operate during a suspended European Union swap deal and taken back only a relative handful denied asylum. The refugees and migrants fleeing war and strife in the Middle East go to Turkey as a jumping-off point to reach Europe and the Greek islands are usually their first route.

Violence has flared occasionally as frustration has built in the island camps and detention centers where some people have been kept two years or more and where secret video showed them living in feces-and-garbage strewn conditions and with little amenities, leading human rights groups to constantly carp about what they called inhuman conditions.

In the last few days, three refugees and migrants threatened to commit suicide, said Kathimerii, and one of them was hospitalized after getting electrocuted while climbing up a pole.

In a report issued earlier in the month, Amnesty International said overcrowding, poor sanitation and security lapses are putting refugees and migrants being kept at the reception and processing centers of Vathy on Samos and Moria on Lesvos at risk but that, along with other similar complaints, have been ignored by the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA-led coalition.
