US Model Tells Tourists to Shun Greece, Immediate Backlash on the Internet

August 14, 2019

American fashion model Gigi Hadid said after the villa where she and her sister Bella were staying on Mykonos was one of a number robbed that they fled Greece fast and then turned to social media to tell other tourists to avoid the country altogether.

Already in trouble for making fun of Asians among other comments critics said were inane – which hasn’t stopped her from being a super-rich celebrity and idol of young women everywhere – she took to Instagram to take another shot at Greece.

That drew an immediate backlash on the Internet as she was accused of blaming the whole country for the robbery, with one critic noting that people get robbed every day in New York City but keep going there.

It didn’t keep her from posting an Instagram shot of herself in the villa, wearing a super-micro bikini – which got a lot of attention – as she advised would-be travelers to skip Greece and to “spend your money elsewhere.”

One person commented, per Cosmopolitan, “I got robbed in Miami… I don’t tell people not to go there… stupid post.”

Another pointed out that Greece heavily relies on its tourism industry, saying, “One of the main sources of income of Greece is its tourism and you’re literally defaming the country. Millions of people visit Mykonos yearly. Just because it happened to you, it doesn’t mean it happens to everyone. Have you ever seen the crimes and killings that happen in your country? Let alone the mass shootings? Please! What does that mean, that no one should visit the US?”

She was undaunted and unrepentant, following it up with the same racy photo – it wasn’t said if she was trying to get more publicity – and to gripe more about Greece.

She said: “Let me make this clear for everyone below who thinks I don’t deserve to have an opinion on my experience and warn people of this – I was robbed along with more than 30 houses that night, some to gunpoint. It was not possible to contact any form of law enforcement except through my local security who happened to have a contact. That is a privilege that most people traveling there wouldn’t have.

If something happens while the police station is closed, there is nothing that can be done to protect yourself, and when the station does open, it doesn’t seem as though their training and resources are in line with keeping people safe or keeping up with the amount of crime that is happening on a nightly basis there (I am speaking of the island specifically only because it’s where I experienced this). This is not information that is shared with people before they go. If I’d known it happened so much and there was not enough infrastructure to protect myself I wouldn’t have gone. So this is my opinion based on actual events and you not liking that isn’t my problem. Lastly, I work my ass off and never do a trip like this for myself and friends, so if I want to post pictures of the trip after being robbed, I will do so.”

The gossip site TMZ said they returned after an outing to find their belongings scattered all over the place and most of their stuff missing, including jewelry, designer purses, clothes and sunglasses among other items

The initial report said Gigi laughed off the robbery in a warning to her followers in the caption of a bikini-clad photo posted to her secondary Instagram account.

The women said they called police who they said offered little help and dismissed the robbery although they complained the villa’s staff had access and they think it was an inside job without offering any evidence.

The group was in Greece celebrating their older sister Alana’s birthday, but left early on a chartered plane after the alleged robbery, leaving Greece behind.

Mykonos has become a kind of hedonist’s paradise for the rich and famous and wannabes and minor celebrities who want to be seen and known for runaway tax evasion by restaurants and clubs, some charging up to 1000 euros ($1131) a bottle for champagne.
