Tsipras Proposes Postponement of SYRIZA Congress Due to Pandemic

September 2, 2020

ATHENS — SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras proposed the postponement of the party's autumn main congress due to the persistently unfolding coronavirus pandemic, at the party's political secretariat meeting on Wednesday.

Tsipras' proposal will be further discussed at the party's political council meeting on Thursday and decided upon at the party's central committee meeting on Sunday.

Furthermore, Tsipras said that the country is entering "a time of unprecedented insecurity."

"September finds every Greek family anxious with the outbreak of the pandemic, with the opening of schools without safety protocols, with growing financial deadlocks, with reduced incomes and rising debts, unemployment and overall uncertainty", he underlined.

On top of all this, he noted, "comes the insecurity caused by the tension in Greek-Turkish relations and everyone's intense concern over a likely heated incident between the two countries."
